Let Your Imagination Run Wild!

You want to know what is one of the funnest parts of making big life changes?  Letting your imagination run wild!

Listen, you are dreaming of change anyway.  Why not dream big and let your imagination have some fun?  It doesn’t take any more effort to dream big than it does to dream small.  So let yourself have some fun and think of great things you could do.

When your imagination is allowed to run wild, a few things happen that are very beneficial.  First of all, you are not holding it back and your end goal will become bigger and better.  You also get more excited about your goals when they are big and awesome!  And you need that inner excitement to help you start moving toward your new life.

As long as your goals and dreams do not bring harm to anyone else, feel free to let them get crazy.   This is the one time when you have no boundaries and the only limits you have are those in your mind.

The only thing you need to do while you are thinking of all the possibilities is to write them all down.  Eventually something is going to stick out and it will keep reappearing.  When that happens, you know you are on to something.

Keep in mind that once you start moving toward something, be open to have it change a little.  Your imagination and energy are still working and something better might be headed your way.  And don’t worry, if a change happens it won’t be far off from what you originally thought.  But it could be something like, instead of being the rock star, you become the best drum maker in the world and your passion shines.  It’s close and in the ballpark, but just a little different.

So dream big.  Write all of your ideas and thoughts down.  Start taking action towards your dream right away.  Nothing gets your closer to change that actually doing something.  Stay flexible and have fun….that’s the point right.

Gratitude First

You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth saying again and again until it sinks in.  If you want to start making some positive changes in your life, start with gratitude.

For some reason focusing on gratitude changes your mood and brings you more good things.  It’s kind of a super power.

Believe me, I know at first it seems difficult or ridiculous to focus on gratitude when you feel like things are not going that well for you.  But listen to this:  Those negative thoughts about your situation are exactly what’s holding you back.  You are sitting in this awful cycle of negativity.

So the only way out is to start focusing on the good things in your life.  And you can start as small as possible.  When I started making my journey to creating the life that I wanted to live, I started a gratitude journal.  The first few posts were boring, bland and not very inspiring.  I would write:

I am grateful for my kids.  I am grateful for my wife.  I am grateful my car works.  Umm, ok that’s it for today.

Then I would do it again the next day…and the next day.  After a week or so of bland entries, I started seeing more things that I was grateful for.  My entries started expanding to more and more things.  Next thing I knew, I was writing full pages or even more of things that I was grateful for.

I even started writing gratitude thoughts about things I wanted to be thankful for in the future.  I would write statements about my future and being thankful for all of the dreams that came true.  I couldn’t stop finding things to be grateful for after about a month.

So start right now and write down some things you are grateful for or for things you will be grateful for when they become real.  This is the easiest way to get out of your rut and on your path to living with passion.  Just get started now and things will start to change for you.

Take Control

I am a big fan of Jack Canfield and his Success Principles.  His first Principle is about taking 100% responsibility.

We have control over our thoughts, our words and our behaviors.  You just have to take responsibility for what you have control.  Just three things:

Your Thoughts

Your Words

Your Behaviors

If you start looking at responsibility this way, you can create change in your life.  You can achieve your goals and your dreams.  Big things are possible too!

You are finally able to control your life.  And you do it, by controlling what you think about.  Our minds are throwing us all types of thoughts, all of the time, all day long.  Good thoughts.  Negative thoughts.  Weird thoughts.  Discouraging thoughts.  And most importantly: Limiting Thoughts.

What holds you back?  You.

You hold you back.  You hold yourself back with your thoughts.

Don’t like it?  Change it.  Change it by controlling what you think about.  Start thinking better thoughts.  Think better thoughts that move you toward whatever it is you truly want in life.  Just start thinking about what you want.  Focus on that.

You control your life by controlling what you say.  Try saying positive things to your spouse and children…your family and friends.  Say nice things to the people you work with.  Hell, say nice things to yourself.  You choose what you say, why not choose things that do you well?

So now all of a sudden you are thinking better thoughts and saying better things to yourself and the people around you.  What do you think is going to start happening with your behavior?  It gets better too.  Maybe it leads to being of service to others more.  Maybe it leads to random acts of kindness.  Maybe it leads to you paying it forward.  It will lead you to doing more things you enjoy and having a better overall outlook on life.

Either way, it’s your behavior.  Get control of it.

Just start by making a commitment to yourself that you will be mindful of any negative thoughts, self talk or actions.  When you realize them, quickly respond in kind with an opposite positive action, saying or thought.  Then give yourself a big smile!

You won’t believe how good you feel in about 30 days or less.

Read…Read…Read

As I started my journey to figuring out my life, my purpose and I what I really wanted to do, I found something to be extremely helpful.  Reading.

I was never a big reader growing up and unfortunately I stuck with that story into my adult life.  Every now and then I would get fed up with my life and go buy a book on self development.  For not being a reader, I loved reading these books.  They gave me some inspiration and a glimmer of hope that life really could be better.

Unfortunately, I would read a book.  Get motivated and start feeling good.  Do nothing.  And then next thing I knew, I would be back into my normal routine.  Time would pass and I would eventually buy another book.  And the cycle would start over.

However once I made a real change, one thing I did was read more often.  I started with a chapter a day.  It started to get addicting to be able to learn.  I started with more and more self development books.  Then I started reading books about subjects I wanted to improve in my life.  Money. Relationships. Parenting.  Career.

Most books have less than 30 chapters.  That means you can read a book or more a month.  By the end of a year, you can imagine how much more knowledgeable you will be.

My advice is to only read books that are non-fiction.  This way you are learning something and are literally growing as a person.  Of course you can read fiction too.  But only if you are getting your one chapter a day in from non-fiction.

If you don’t know where to start, start with something you have always wanted to learn more about or something related to your line of work.  If you choose your work as a subject, who knows, maybe you will have more to offer by the end of the year and can ask for a big raise.

Opportunities are endless.  If you are looking for a change and don’t know how to begin, start with reading.  Plus you will have more to talk about at parties.

Stay With It!

One of the biggest lessons to help you while you are trying to make a change is to just stay with it.

I have read countless books and spent countless hours thinking about what to do with my life.  Sometimes it just felt worthless and I had a difficult time seeing the point to all of it. But deep down I knew I wanted something different…

So I would buy another book and try to find my inspiration.  I just stayed with it.  Eventually it started to click for me.  But I realized that it was up to me to keep my own motivation to make a big change.

Before I knew it, I was reading all of the time.  I was listening to positive podcast while driving around.  I was watching motivational videos in the morning while getting ready for work.  I was journaling about nothing and everything.  I started a gratitude journal.  I made a vision board and left myself notes all around the house.

Not too long after all of that, things just started feeling like they were clicking for me.  I had developed habits that were aligning me with my true purpose.  Even though I wasn’t completely sure of my end goal, it was fun working towards it.

There were plenty of times that I would quit trying for long periods of time.  There were times when I didn’t think anything would ever get better and my life was going to be mediocre and boring.

But thank goodness I just stayed with it.  Now I live in my flow.  I feel calmer, more collected and peaceful.  I still don’t have all of the answers, but I do have my direction and it feels great.

So don’t give up.  Don’t give in.  Just stay with it and things will happen for you.  Keep reading books, going to self help seminars, listening to podcasts or whatever else gives you those little glimmers of hope.  That’s where your answers await.
